Gartner: There is a Need for Next-Generation Firewalls in the Market

According to Gartner, the firewall market is evolving as the industry responds to increasingly sophisticated attacks and targeted threats. Traditional stateful inspection firewalls are no longer effective in protecting the enterprise. Gartner believes it's time to re-evaluate your security infrastructure and consider next-generation firewalls. Download a copy of the 2010 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Network Firewalls to read Gartner's recommendations.

There’s an Enterprise 2.0 party going on at your company right now!  Employees are using apps like SharePoint, Facebook, YouTube, and Skype to get their jobs done and collaborate for business. While these applications are capable of delivering significant business value, they can also introduce substantial risks to any organization, including data leakage, identify theft, malware and other threats.  What should IT professionals responsible for ensuring network security do to control these applications? Download the white paper, “To Block Or Not. Is that the Question?” and enter for a chance to win the Enterprise 2.0 Party Sweepstakes. Have a chance to win one of three Grand Prizes: a Palo Alto Networks PA-500 Enterprise Firewall and company party to go along with it!  Join the Party.

Palo Alto Networks’ App-ID Passes 1,000 Applications

Palo Alto Network’s App-ID now identifies and controls over 1,000 applications – all inside the firewall (as opposed to an IPS add-on).  There are other elements to consider as well: quality, accuracy, and richness of the identification.  A simple IPS signature that identifies a single version of a single client is not comparable to a more sophisticated, firewall-based technology like Palo Alto Networks App-ID.  App-ID, for a given application, may consist of multiple signatures and heuristics. For example, Palo Alto Networks has one BitTorrent App-ID, which identifies all BitTorrent traffic, regardless of client or client version. Other vendors have a signature listed for each version of each BitTorrent-compatible client – which looks good on paper, but ultimately doesn’t matter.

What does matter is that by using a next-generation firewalls’ positive security model, organizations can enforce a policy that only enables certain applications, regardless of port, protocol, or SSL encryption.  For enabled applications, organizations can then add additional security steps – like scanning for threats or confidential data.  For information on all of the applications App-ID identifies, please visit Applipedia.

Palo Alto Networks Resolves New Facebook Social Plug-ins Privacy Concerns

Palo Alto Networks released new functionality that enables enterprises to control Facebook Social Plug-ins, empowering users to continue to embrace Facebook while mitigating any privacy concerns. Facebook users in enterprises are susceptible to having their confidential data shared with third parties because of recent changes at Facebook, which cause behavioral data from its users to be made available unless a user explicitly opts out. Palo Alto Networks’ new App-ID™ allows IT security teams to protect their Facebook users against the undesired data sharing while transparently preserving Facebook functionality and not breaking the functionality of other websites that rely on the Facebook Social Plug-ins.  More…

Spring 2010 Application Usability and Risk Report is Here

The Application Usage and Risk Report (5th Edition, Spring 2010) from Palo Alto Networks summarizes traffic patterns on nearly 350 networks worldwide to reveal that the application usage is remarkably consistent. Neither geographic location or vertical industry had a significant impact on usage patterns. The data confirms that globally, the barriers to accessing an application are minimal, enabling rapid worldwide adoption, regardless of where the application was developed.  Download the full report.

About Palo Alto Networks

Palo Alto Networks was founded in 2005 with a mission to create a family of next generation firewalls that allow IT organizations to regain visibility and control of Internet applications and traffic on their network. The firewalls were designed to meet five important requirements:

  • Visibility into all applications, regardless of port, protocol, evasive tactic – or even SSL encryption
  • Identification of application users by name – not just by IP address
  • Granular control of application access, by user or groups of users
  • Real-time threat prevention, content control, and URL filtering
  • In-line throughput up to 10gbps, with no performance degradation

To address these requirements, Palo Alto Networks firewalls combine innovative new identification technologies, such as App-ID, User-ID, and Content-ID, all leveraging an underlying Single-Pass Parallel Processing Architecture (SP3), which ensures maximum throughput with minimum latency.
