I was reticent to use web-based applications in the past, and I was an early detractor from GMail. Now, I use GMail for all e-mail correspondence, use online storage and CVS to handle files and collaboration, use several web-applications to replace desktop office productivity applications, and look for the best services to keep me connected to my data no matter where I am sitting.

The beauty of the web-based applications is that they make a mobile office truly available, even lacking your own personal laptop. As long as you can find an Internet-connect PC, you are set. Then there's the downfall as well. You must be connected to the Internet. Not in all cases, mind, because you can still do the old cache it on my laptop routine, but then that defeats the initial point.

There are hurdles to overcome, even beyond what you have mentioned, but it looks like many companies are blazing the trail to cloud computing, and I must say that I am on board with the initiatives until the next big thing comes along.
