Here's the framework that stops the next one. Overnight on October 11, attackers reached the refrigeration controllers in hundreds of French supermarkets and forced them into continuous defrost. Some cases climbed to 50°C within six hours. Stock was destroyed, fires broke out at several sites, and losses are expected to run into the millions of euros.^1^ Many affected units had reached end of life and no longer receive security updates, while others were running outdated firmware.^2^ More than a day after the attack, at least 4,500 management interfaces were still reachable from the internet.^2^ ## **Supermarkets today. More to come in critical industries.** Refrigeration is the last place most OT teams would look, and that is the point. The three weaknesses that failed in France exist in virtually every [critical infrastructure](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/cyberpedia/what-is-critical-infrastructure?ts=markdown) sector: * **Assets nobody accounted for.** Controllers installed and remotely serviced by contractors, owned by facilities, and absent from the security team's inventory. One victim said the attack reached its stores through a refrigeration equipment supplier --- a textbook [supply chain](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/cyberpedia/what-is-supply-chain-attack?ts=markdown) exposure.^3^ * **Firmware and patching lag.** Manufacturers had shipped fixes for their newer controllers. Many fielded units never received them. * **End-of-life equipment still in service.** For these controllers, no patch is coming --- ever. The same is true of the legacy PLCs, RTUs and HMIs running water, energy and manufacturing operations today. This summer, the same profile let attackers lock operators out of water systems across [more than 30 Minnesota communities](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/network-security/the-water-sector-reckoning-is-here-and-the-controls-that-stop-it-already-exist/?ts=markdown). Frontier AI is shrinking the window: 29% of CVEs are now weaponized within 24 hours of disclosure.^4^ Water in July. Food retail in October. The next target will be whichever operation --- a utility, a plant, a hospital, a pipeline ---also has exposed, unpatchable assets. ## **A three-part framework to protect critical infrastructure in the AI era** Protecting modern OT networks from these types of attacks while establishing a foundation for AI-era threats requires a unified defense strategy built for operational environments. This framework pairs proactive risk management with AI-powered controls and continuous threat detection to safeguard high-consequence assets and prevent operational disruption. ## **1. Visibility with actionable risk insights** See your [OT environment](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/cyberpedia/what-is-ot-security?ts=markdown), understand what matters and prioritize risk. * **Asset discovery, inventory and communications mapping** across OT, IoT and building systems --- including contractor-installed devices and the remote paths that reach them. * **Attack path mapping analysis** correlates different contexts (asset, connectivity, known vulns, likelihood of exploitation, exposure/hygiene, threats) to show how an attacker could move toward a critical asset, so teams close the paths that matter first. * **Operational risk prioritization** that weighs device function, safety classification, blast radius and existing controls --- not CVSS alone. Agentic security recommendations and correlated threat intelligence turn findings into next actions. ## **2. AI-powered OT defense** Apply the right controls and stop threats before they reach the process. **Contextual OT microsegmentation.** Today's coarse, network-based segmentation is not granular enough to protect critical processes from new attack surfaces. A single high-risk engineering workstation sharing a zone with an HMI and a PLC can put the whole process within reach. Contextual OT microsegmentation uses what the NGFW knows about each asset --- its role, its process, its risk --- to contain the blast radius: * **Harden the network with contextual OT policy.** Define and enforce granular [IEC 62443](https://www.isa.org/standards-and-publications/isa-standards/isa-iec-62443-series-of-standards) conduits based on least privilege and business rationale. * **Contain the blast radius with more granular zoning.** Create plant-floor zones tied to specific processes and risk levels, and apply [microsegmentation](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/cyberpedia/what-is-microsegmentation?ts=markdown) where it adds the most protection --- stopping [lateral movement](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/cyberpedia/what-is-lateral-movement?ts=markdown) between process zones. * **Shield legacy, vulnerable devices from risky exposure.** Enforce risk-adaptive, least-privilege policy that limits exposure for high-risk devices in heterogeneous environments. [**Frontier Virtual Patching**](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/2026/08/redefining-network-security-for-the-frontier-ai-era/?ts=markdown)**.** Uses Frontier AI to discover vulnerabilities and deliver network-level protections, often before a vulnerability is publicly disclosed or a vendor patch exists. No device modification, no reboot, no maintenance window. For the legacy PLCs, RTUs and HMIs that will never receive another vendor patch, it turns a known exposure into a protected asset. ## **3. Real-time threat detection** Detect attacks, prevent impact and keep operations running. * **Continuous monitoring** for anomalous OT traffic and operational events, with deep protocol inspection for Modbus, BACNet, EtherNet/IP and more. * **Process variable trending** with alerting on critical deviations --- catching a setpoint change or forced cycle before it becomes a physical outcome. * **Customized OT detection rules** mapped to [MITRE ATT\&CK](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/cyberpedia/what-is-mitre-attack?ts=markdown) for ICS. ## **The foundation: visibility and enforcement in the same place** All three run natively on the Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Firewall, which delivers inline visibility, policy enforcement and prevention across OT environments, including the ruggedized edge. Detection-only tools can spot an attack, but someone still has to translate that alert into a firewall rule. At 2 AM on a Sunday, across hundreds of sites, that gap is the attack. When the platform that sees the asset also controls the traffic to it, the response is a policy decision that takes effect immediately. Industry analysts have recognized this approach. Palo Alto Networks was named a Leader, with the highest score in the current offering category, in [The Forrester Wave™: Operational Technology Security Solutions, Q3 2026](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/network-security/palo-alto-networks-named-a-leader-in-the-forrester-wave-operational-technology-security-solutions-q3-2026/?ts=markdown). Omdia named Palo Alto Networks a Leader in its [Market Radar: OT Cybersecurity Platforms, 2026](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/network-security/omdia-ot-cybersecurity-market-radar?ts=markdown) --- the only Leader rated "Broad" or "Advanced" across all 13 capabilities evaluated. ## **What to do this week** * **Find** every internet-reachable controller --- OT, building management, refrigeration --- including contractor-installed devices. * **Safely** enable least-privilege access through a firewall-enforced conduit. * **Virtually patch** end-of-life and unpatched devices while replacement is budgeted. * **Alert** on setpoint and configuration changes outside expected windows. None of these steps depends on a patch that may never ship. ## **Recommended Reading** 1.
