SANTA CLARA, CA – March 8, 2016 – Palo Alto Networks® (NYSE: PANW), the leader in next-generation security, today announced that the University of Portsmouth has selected, deployed and consolidated its security infrastructure on the Palo Alto Networks security platform.

With a student body of nearly 22,000, the University of Portsmouth is ranked among the top 500 universities in the world. Palo Alto Networks is enabling the university to improve throughput, network stability, and service to users, increase security, and lower IT management burdens.

  • "Our network provides the lifeblood that fuels innovative research and supports our educational mission, so bandwidth availability, network responsiveness and reliability, and security are top priorities. We recognized that our incumbent, port-based firewalls offering only 1GB of throughput were insufficient. We moved to Palo Alto Networks for the superior security it delivered, and because it could handle a 10GB connection for fast network access so we could provide expanded services to users. We are very pleased with our decision. "

− James Holland, Network and Security Services Manager, University of Portsmouth

Palo Alto Networks has allowed the University of Portsmouth to receive 10 times more bandwidth from Jisc’s network, Janet, the United Kingdom's high-speed network for U.K. research and education community, and access a wide range of services such as videoconferencing, web mail, ISP, and research services. The visibility and access control by use of Palo Alto Networks is enabling the university to better protect users and intellectual property and manage security policies. The security platform was installed by Khipu Networks, a longtime Palo Alto Networks NextWave Platinum Partner, Authorised Service Centre (ASC) and Certified Professional Services Partner (CPSP) which designed and maintains the university's security infrastructure.

The University of Portsmouth recognizes the advantages of the Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Security Platform, which consists of a Next-Generation Firewall, Threat Intelligence Cloud, and Advanced Endpoint Protection. The deployment includes Threat Prevention and Palo Alto Networks Panorama network security management offering, which lets the university easily manage all of its security web policies from just one location and interface.

The University of Portsmouth has a strong reputation for teaching excellence and for staff and student satisfaction, alongside internationally excellent research strengths. Situated at the heart of a historic waterfront city, the university contributes significantly to economic regeneration in the city and the region, raising aspirations and encouraging future generations to benefit from higher education. It is ranked in the top 500 universities in the world in the most recent Times Higher Education World University Rankings published in 2015 and is one of the top ten modern universities in the U.K., according to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016.
