Securing Medicaid in the Cloud

In the U.S., the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, or CMS, is encouraging states to modernize their Medicaid Management Information Systems or MMIS. The states have run these systems on mainframes for 40+ years, but in 2005 the Medicaid Information Technology Architecture (MITA) was adopted. This paved the way for new versions of MMIS to be built in the cloud.

As states invest in upgrading their Medicaid systems, they are now requested to:

  • Develop new systems in the cloud (Medicaid-as-a-Service)
  • Use Medicaid-defined API’s (e.g. Poplin, HL7, and FHIR)
  • Support Multiple contracts across vendors: Pharmacy, Eligibility, Enrollment...
  • Collaborate with other states, and create partnerships to develop multi-state systems

In 2015, the first Medicaid system was developed for the Cloud and is now running in Michigan.

Additionally, multiple states have plans to move to the Cloud with the goal being to deploy Medicaid systems faster with less cost and more agility.
