At companies that include Check Point, NetScreen, McAfee, Juniper Networks and Cisco our founders, management team, and board of directors have helped create some of the most important network security technologies of the last 15+ years, including stateful inspection, hardware-based security, and intrusion prevention. They have joined and remain at Palo Alto Networks because we are all driven to make sure that the next game-changing innovations will and are being developed here.

 

Our management team

Nikesh Arora

Chief Executive Officer and Chairman

Nikesh Arora joined as chairman and CEO of Palo Alto Networks in June 2018. Before joining Palo Alto Networks, Nikesh served as president and chief operating officer of SoftBank Group Corp. Prior to that, he held a number of positions at Google, Inc. during a 10-year span, including senior vice president and chief business officer, president of global sales operations and business development, and president of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Prior to joining Google, Nikesh held the role of chief marketing officer for the T-Mobile International Division of Deutsche Telekom AG. He was chief executive officer and founder of T-Motion PLC, which merged with T-Mobile International in 2002.

Nikesh serves on the board of Compagnie Financière Richemont S.A., a public Switzerland-based luxury goods holding company, and Tipping Point, a non-profit organization that fights poverty in the Bay Area. Previously, he served on the boards of SoftBank Group Corp., Sprint Corp., Colgate-Palmolive Inc. and Yahoo! Japan, among others. He holds an M.S. in Business Administration from Northeastern University, an M.S. in finance from Boston College and a B. Tech. in electrical engineering from the Institute of Technology at Banaras Hindu University. 

Mark Anderson

President

As president, Mark Anderson is responsible for driving all sales, go-to-market, support, customer satisfaction, and business and corporate development. When he joined the company in 2012 and prior to becoming president in August 2016, Mark served as senior vice president of Worldwide Field Operations. Prior to joining Palo Alto Networks, he was executive vice president of Worldwide Sales at F5 Networks, where he oversaw all sales activities for the company, beginning in 2007.

Mark also has held sales leadership positions at Lucent Technologies, RadioFrame Networks, Cisco and Comdisco.

In June 2017, Mark joined the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley.

Mark holds a B.A. in Business and Economics from York University in Toronto.

 

Kathy Bonanno

Chief Financial Officer

Kathy Bonanno joined Palo Alto Networks in 2014. In November 2017, she became executive vice president and CFO, overseeing the company's finance, accounting and manufacturing functions. Previously, she served as senior vice president of finance and had responsibility for financial planning, treasury, enterprise risk management and facilities. In her 30 years of business experience, she has held a variety of senior finance positions, including vice president, FP&A at Symantec Corporation and managing director of Investor Relations at American Airlines. Kathy holds an MBA from Texas Christian University and a B.S. in finance from Arizona State University.

Nir Zuk

Founder and Chief Technology Officer

Nir Zuk brings a wealth of network security expertise and industry experience to Palo Alto Networks. Prior to co-founding Palo Alto Networks, Nir was CTO at NetScreen Technologies, which was acquired by Juniper Networks in 2004. Prior to NetScreen, Nir was co-founder and CTO at OneSecure, a pioneer in intrusion prevention and detection appliances. Nir was also a principal engineer at Check Point Software Technologies, and was one of the developers of stateful inspection technology.

Dave Peranich

Executive Vice President, Worldwide Sales

Dave Peranich joined Palo Alto Networks as executive vice president of Worldwide Sales in August 2016. In this role, he manages the field sales organization, which includes our worldwide channels team, sales operations, and the sales reps and sales engineers around the world.

Prior to joining Palo Alto Networks, he held several sales leadership roles over a nine-year tenure at Riverbed Technology, including senior vice president, Worldwide Sales; executive vice president, Worldwide Field Operations; and president, Worldwide Field Operations. His experience also includes leadership positions at Centrata, Siebel Systems, Remedy Corporation and Oracle, among others. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA and a Master of Science in Systems Management from University of Southern California.

Lee Klarich

Chief Product Officer

Since early product inception in 2006, Lee Klarich has served as the head of product management at Palo Alto Networks, overseeing the product strategy and roadmap and playing a key role in delivering our Next-Generation Security Platform. In August 2017, he became chief product officer with responsibility for both engineering and product management for the company.

Prior to Palo Alto Networks, he was the director of product management for Juniper Networks, where he was responsible for firewall/VPN platforms and software. He joined Juniper Networks through the NetScreen Technologies acquisition, where he managed the same product line. Previously, he held various positions at Excite@Home and Packard Bell-NEC. He holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from Cornell University.

René Bonvanie

Chief Marketing Officer

René Bonvanie has more than 25 years of executive management and marketing experience in enterprise technology. Most recently, he served as senior vice president of Marketing, SaaS, and IT at Serena Software, and was senior vice president of Global Marketing at SAP. Earlier, as CMO at Business Objects, René was responsible for all marketing activity, including corporate communications, field marketing, and product marketing. Prior to that, he served as senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing at VERITAS Software Corporation. In his 10 years as vice president of Product Marketing at Oracle Corporation, he managed the Oracle database product line, had editorial responsibility for Oracle Magazine and Profit Magazine, and co-founded Oracle's developer program, Oracle Technology Network.

Naveen Zutshi

Chief Information Officer

Naveen Zutshi joined Palo Alto Networks as senior vice president and chief information officer in December 2015. In this role he is responsible for Palo Alto Networks information technology solutions, driving a comprehensive strategy for information technology that will enable the company to rapidly scale, deliver innovative solutions globally and build a world-class IT organization.

Naveen’s experience spans large-scale enterprises to small startups with special focus on applications, software development and IT infrastructure. Prior to joining the Palo Alto Networks team, Naveen was senior vice president, Technology at Gap Inc. where he was responsible for the company’s infrastructure, operations and information security organizations.

Naveen earned a B.E. in Computer Engineering from Bangalore University and an MBA from the University of Arkansas.

Matthew Stauble

Senior Vice President, Global Customer Services

With more than 22 years of experience, Matthew Stauble is responsible for global customer support strategy and operations. He joined Palo Alto Networks in June of 2010 to help build the company’s worldwide support infrastructure, processes and customer support team.

This has been accomplished by focusing on global expansion, channel partner enablement, developing and rewarding great people, building business process and optimizing technology, while delivering outstanding customer satisfaction results.

Prior to Palo Alto Networks, he was vice president of Services at Innotas, where he was responsible for account management, delivery services, support, and education. Matthew also held similar positions at Hewlett-Packard, Mercury (acquired by HP), Kintana, where he launched the company's customer support organization, and Remedy.

Matthew graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Clinical Psychology from San Jose State University.

 

Jeff True

Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary

Jeff True has served as vice president, general counsel, and secretary at Palo Alto Networks since March of 2011, and brings a wealth of experience representing technology companies in Silicon Valley. He is responsible for all company legal functions and oversight, including corporate governance, intellectual property, commercial contracts, and litigation. From 2005 to 2010, Jeff was vice president and general counsel at 2Wire, where he was responsible for all legal matters, including the acquisition of the company by Pace, plc in October 2010. Prior to joining 2Wire, he served as associate general counsel at Informatica from 1998 to 2005, and was responsible for public company reporting and compliance, intellectual property, and commercial contracts. He received his B.A. in Communication Studies from UCLA and his J.D. from Santa Clara University.

Liane Hornsey

Chief People Officer

Liane Hornsey joined Palo Alto Networks as chief people officer in September 2018. Liane previously served as chief people officer at Uber Technologies, Inc. where she helped transform the culture during a period of significant turbulence. Prior to that, she served as chief administrative officer and operating partner at SoftBank Group International. In this role she traveled the globe helping portfolio companies scale and achieve unsurpassed human capital success. For almost ten years before joining SoftBank, Liane led People Operations for Google’s Global Business and became Google’s first female vice president in human resources.

Liane has held senior leadership roles at lastminute.com Group, Virgin Media and BMG Music. Liane is widely recognized as one of the world’s pre-eminent practitioners in people operations as well as organization and leadership development.

Liane serves on the board of BUILD, a nonprofit organization that provides real-world entrepreneurial experience to empower youth from under-resourced communities to excel in education, lead in their communities and succeed professionally.

Rick Howard

Chief Security Officer

Rick is the CSO for Palo Alto Networks, where he is responsible for the company’s internal security program, the oversight of the Palo Alto Networks Threat Intelligence Team and the development of thought leadership for the cybersecurity community. His prior jobs include being the CISO for TASC, the general manager of iDefense and the SOC director at Counterpane.

He served in the U.S. Army for 23 years and spent the last two years of his career running the Army’s CERT. Rick holds a Master of Computer Science degree from the Naval Postgraduate School and an engineering degree from the U.S. Military Academy. He taught computer science at the Military Academy and contributed as an executive editor to two books: "Cyber Fraud: Tactics, Techniques and Procedures" and "Cyber Security Essentials."

Jean Compeau

Chief Accounting Officer

Jean Compeau joined Palo Alto Networks in 2012. In February 2018, she became chief accounting officer, with continued responsibility for the company's accounting and tax functions. Previously, she served as senior vice president, corporate controller at Palo Alto Networks. Jean also held a variety of senior accounting or corporate controller positions, including at Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Exodus Communications and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Jean holds a B.A. degree in Business Economics from UCLA and is a certified public accountant (inactive) in California.

Nikesh Arora

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Mark D. McLaughlin

Vice Chairman

Mark D. McLaughlin became vice chairman of the board of directors for Palo Alto Networks in June 2018, following his retirement as the company’s chief executive officer and chairman of the board. Mark joined the company as president and chief executive officer in 2011 and became chairman in 2012. Prior to that, he held a number of key positions at Verisign, including serving as chief operating officer, executive vice president of Products and Marketing, and head of the company’s Naming Services business. Prior to Verisign, he was the vice president of Sales and Business Development for Signio, a leading internet payment company. Before joining Signio, he was the vice president of Business Development for Gemplus, the world’s leading smart-card company. Previous to Gemplus, he also served as general counsel of Caere Corporation and practiced law as an attorney with Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. 

For nearly a decade, Mark has had the honor of serving as a member of the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee, a body that for more than 30 years has brought industry chief executives together to provide counsel on national security policy and technical issues to the U.S. president and the national security leadership. Mark has served two-year terms as chairman and vice chairman of the NSTAC. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Seattle University School of Law and his B.S. degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served as an attack helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army and earned his Airborne Wings. Mark currently also serves on the board of directors for Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM). 

 

Nir Zuk

Founder and Chief Technology Officer

Nir Zuk brings a wealth of network security expertise and industry experience to Palo Alto Networks. Frank Calderoni

President and Chief Executive Officer, Anaplan, Inc.

Frank Calderoni brings to the Palo Alto Networks board more than 30 years of strategic business insight and technology experience. Since January 2017, he has served as president and chief executive officer of Anaplan, Inc. From June 2015 to January 2017, he served as executive vice president, operations and CFO of Red Hat Inc. From May 2004 to January 2015, he held various positions at Cisco Systems Inc., including executive vice president and CFO. Frank also held executive positions at QLogic Corp., SanDisk Corp. and IBM Corp. over a number of years.

In addition to active participation on the Palo Alto Networks board, he currently serves on the board of Adobe Systems Incorporated. Frank holds a B.S. in Accounting and Finance from Fordham University and an MBA from Pace University.

Asheem Chandna

Partner, Greylock Partners

Asheem Chandna (follow on Twitter @chandna) is a Partner at Greylock Partners, where he is focused on the next generation of enterprise companies, including security. He has helped create and grow multiple technology businesses and product lines to market-leading positions – both as a former product executive and as a venture capitalist. His current company boards and/or investments include Avi Networks, Awake Networks, Delphix, Innovium, Obsidian Security, Palo Alto Networks, and Rubrik. Previous company boards and/or investments include Aruba Networks (ARUN), CipherTrust (INTC), Imperva (IMPV), NetBoost (INTC), Sourcefire (FIRE), PortAuthority Technologies (WBSN), and Securent (CSCO).

Asheem joined Greylock in 2003 from Check Point Software, where he was vice president of business development and product management. During his 6+ year tenure, Check Point grew from $10M to $500M+ in annual revenues. Asheem founded the business development and product management organizations, led corporate marketing during high growth years, and directed Check Point’s product/business strategy, product management, and industry partnerships. Prior to Check Point, Asheem was vice president of marketing with CoroNet Systems (acquired by Compuware), where he helped create and define a new product category for application-aware network monitoring. Previously, Asheem held strategic marketing and product line positions with SynOptics/Bay Networks and AT&T Bell Laboratories.

Asheem is a charter member of TiE Silicon Valley, on the panel of judges for the Wall Street Journal Global Technology Innovation Awards, on the advisory board and program committee for the RSA Conference, a mentor at Stanford's StartX student accelerator and part of the VC program at DeVenCI (Defense Venture Capital Initiative). Born and raised in India, Asheem holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.

John M. Donovan

Chief Executive Officer, AT&T Communications, AT&T Inc.

John Donovan brings decades of top industry experience to the Palo Alto Networks board. Mr. Donovan has worked at AT&T since April 2008, as chief technology officer, chief strategy officer and group president – AT&T Technology and Operations and currently as chief executive officer – AT&T Communications. Before joining AT&T, Mr. Donovan was executive vice president of product, sales, marketing, and operations at Verisign. He also has served as chairman and CEO of inCode Telecom Group Inc., and as a partner with Deloitte Consulting where he was the Americas industry practice director for telecom. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and an MBA from the University of Minnesota.

Carl Eschenbach

General Partner, Sequoia Capital Operations

Carl Eschenbach brings deep operational expertise to the Palo Alto Networks board. Carl has been a general partner at Sequoia Capital Operations, LLC since April 2016. Prior to joining Sequoia Capital Operations, LLC Carl served as chief operating officer and co-president of VMware, Inc. from December 2012 to February 2016, and previously served as president and chief operating officer from April 2012 to December 2012. Carl had previously served as VMware's co-president, Customer Operations from January 2011 to April 2012, and as VMware's executive vice president of Worldwide Field Operations from May 2005 to January 2011. Prior to joining VMware in 2002, he was vice president of North America Sales at Inktomi from 2000 to 2002. In addition to active participation on the Palo Alto Networks board, he currently serves on the board of Zoom Video Communications, Inc. and Workday, Inc. (WDAY). He also held various sales management positions with 3Com Corporation, Lucent Technologies Inc., and EMC.

James J. Goetz

Managing Member, Sequoia Capital

Jim Goetz’ current areas of interest include mobile and enterprise companies. He has helped create and grow a number of technology companies and product lines to market-leading positions both as an entrepreneur and as an investor. He currently leads Sequoia’s investments in Carbon 3D, Chartboost, Drawbridge, GitHub, Metaswitch, Palo Alto Networks, Pocket Gems, and Versa. He was previously on the boards of AdMob (GOOG), Barracuda (CUDA), Clearwell (SYMC), Dash (RIM), eMeter (SI), Entrisphere (ERIC), Jive (JIVE), Nimble Storage (NMBL), PeakStream (GOOG), Peribit (JNPR), Rhapsody (BRCD), and Ruckus Wireless (RKUS), and involved with Bluecoat (BCSI), Karma (FB), Timetra (ALU), and TopSpin (CSCO).

Prior to joining Sequoia Capital, Jim served as a general partner at Accel Partners. In 1996, he co-founded VitalSigns Software (ALU), where he assembled and led the team that pioneered end-user performance management with Net.Medic and application performance market with VitalSuite. Prior to VitalSigns, Jim was the vice president of Network Management for Bay Networks (Synoptics).

Jim has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Mary Pat McCarthy

Former Vice Chair, KPMG LLP

Mary Pat McCarthy joined the board of directors and audit committee for Palo Alto Networks in October 2016. She brings more than 34 years of experience to this position. Most recently she served as vice chair of KPMG LLP, the U.S. member firm of the global audit, tax and advisory services firm.

Starting with KPMG in 1977, she became partner in 1987 and held numerous senior leadership positions at the firm, including executive director of the KPMG Audit Committee Institute, leader of the KPMG Client Care Program, U.S. leader, Industries and Markets, and global leader of Information, Communication and Entertainment Practice.

In addition to serving on the board and audit committee for Andeavor Corporation (formerly Tesoro Corporation), Mary Pat is a member of the Risk Advisory Committee of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD). She also co-chaired the NACD Blue Ribbon Commission on talent development and co-authored multiple books on risk, strategy and business transformation.

Mary Pat earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Creighton University and completed The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania’s KPMG International Development Program.

Stanley J. Meresman

Former Venture Partner, Technology Crossover Ventures

Stan Meresman joined the Palo Alto networks board in September 2014. Stan has served on the boards of directors of a number of public and private companies, including service as chair of the audit committee for several companies. In addition to active participation on the Palo Alto Networks board, he currently serves on the board of Snap, Inc. and Nutanix, Inc. He served as a member of the board of directors of LinkedIn from October 2010 to December 2016, Zynga Inc. from June 2011 to June 2015, Meru Networks, Inc. from September 2010 to May 2013, and Riverbed Technologies, Inc. from March 2005 to May 2012. He was a venture partner with Technology Crossover Ventures, a private equity firm, from January 2004 through December 2004 and was general partner and COO of Technology Crossover Ventures from November 2001 to December 2003.

During the four years prior to joining Technology Crossover Ventures, Stan was a private investor and board member and advisor to several technology companies. From May 1989 to May 1997, he was the senior vice president and CFO of Silicon Graphics, Inc. Prior to Silicon Graphics, he was vice president of Finance and Administration and CFO of Cypress Semiconductor. Stan currently serves on the board of directors of several private companies.

Stan holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley.

Sridhar Ramaswamy

Senior Vice President, Ads & Commerce at Google Inc.

Sridhar Ramaswamy joined our board of directors and nominating and corporate governance committee in August 2017. He has held various leadership roles in Google Inc.’s engineering group since 2003 and currently serves as senior vice president of Ads & Commerce, a position he has held since March 2013. Prior to serving in this role, from April 2011 to March 2013, he served as Google’s senior vice president of Engineering, and from November 2008 to March 2011, he served as vice president of Engineering at Google. Prior to his appointment as vice president, Engineering, he held other roles within Google’s engineering group.

Prior to Google, Sridhar served in engineering and other technical roles at E.piphany Inc., Bell Laboratories, Inc., and Telcordia Technologies, Inc. He received his B.S. in Computer Science from the India Institute of Technology, Madras India and his M.S. and Ph.D degrees in Computer Science from Brown University. Sridhar has published numerous papers on database systems and database theory, and holds several patents in that area.

Daniel J. Warmenhoven

Former Executive Chairman, NetApp Inc.

Dan Warmenhoven brings decades of top industry experience to the Palo Alto Networks board. He has received the Morgan Stanley Leadership Award for Global Commerce, was named one of the "50 Most Powerful People in Networking" by Network World in 2006, and won the prestigious "National Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year" award in 2004. Dan is a director on the board of Avi Networks, Inc., Bechtel Group, Inc., Cohesity, Inc., and Theranos, Inc. Previously, Dan served as chief executive officer of NetApp from 1994 to 2009 and executive chairman of the board of NetApp from August 2009 through September 2014. Under Dan's leadership, NetApp grew to become a multibillion-dollar company and a recognized market leader in networked storage. Dan led the company's initial public offering in November 1995.

He is also vice chairman of the board of the Tech Museum of Innovation, as well as a trustee of Bellarmine College Preparatory, both in San Jose, California. Previously, Dan served as chairman, president, and CEO of Network Equipment Technologies (N.E.T.), a telecommunications manufacturer. He has also held senior management positions at Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP), and prior to that was employed for 13 years with IBM Corporation. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, with honors, from Princeton University.
