What are the differences between the ACE and PCNSE exams?

The Accredited Configuration Engineer (ACE) exam is an accreditation exam that, once passed, indicates that an engineer understands the basic features and functionality of Palo Alto Networks' firewall technologies. It is taken over the Internet, using a common web-browser, and it is a free exam.

The Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Engineer (PCNSE) exam is the key part of a formal certification that proves that those who have passed it possess an in-depth knowledge of how to design, install, configure, manage, and troubleshoot the vast majority of implementations that use the Palo Alto Networks platform. The PCNSE exam has typically been tied to the .1 release of each version of PAN-OS (4.1, 5.1, 6.1, etc.). It should be taken by anyone who wishes to demonstrate a deep understanding of Palo Alto Networks technologies, including customers who use Palo Alto Networks products, value-added resellers, pre-sales system engineers, system integrators, and support staff.

Do I get a certificate after I pass?

Those who pass the ACE exam will be able to download and print an Accredited Configuration Engineer certificate.

How should I prepare for the PCNSE7 exam?

  • The ACE exam covers the material taught in the "Firewall Installation, Configuration, and Management: Essentials I" course, nicknamed 201.  Consult the course description for a list of topics.
  • The best way to prepare for the ACE exam is to attend the 201 course.  You may also choose to review the topic list and then study the 7.1 version of the Admin Guides to learn the same material.  Hands-on practice will make it much easier for you to pass the ACE exam.
