Governments are evolving – to meet the diverse needs for more data for more users – citizens, warfighters, patients, students, contractors – in more places than ever before. Smart Government initiatives are driving innovative approaches to how governments can leverage data from more constituents and smart sensors are changing the way militaries can use real-time data from far afield. Adversaries will always want to harness this data themselves, and have the potential to disrupt communications. Government networks and endpoints – regardless of where they are and who they serve – must be secured, with more flexibility and improved threat visibility and prevention.

Palo Alto Networks, Inc. serves global governments – federal/national, provincial, state, local and tribal – in the following areas:

  • Securing public, private, and hybrid cloud including AWS GovCloud and Office365 environments;
  • Securing Smart Gov initiatives;
  • Securing civilian and military ICS/SCADA environments;
  • Protection at the department, mission, function and network perimeter - verifying the legitimacy of users and the applications that they use and protection against every step of the cyber attack life cycle;
  • Securing mobile users, with policies that follow government users off-network.

  • For one very large military customer, the threat vector was eliminated by 90% just by turning on Palo Alto Networks in their infrastructure.
  • One of the largest U.S. civilian agencies reduced their footprint from 80 devices to 8 Palo Alto Networks platforms and immediately found threats they had not caught previously.
  • It’s not just about the threats – in these lean fiscal times, our government customers favor the total cost of ownership of our security platform. Not only do they achieve improved protection, they experience tremendous cost savings.
  • Governments love our ease and simplicity – One of the largest agencies in the U.S. government deployed our platforms across 4 gateways in just 5 months.

    Palo Alto Networks Public Sector Advisory Council is an organization of former senior military and civilian leaders who advise Palo Alto Networks on the cybersecurity challenges and technology needs of the world's governments.

    Palo Alto Networks network security solutions have performed consistently against a variety of rigorous evaluations for certification. We are committed to the continued certification and performance evaluation of our products. Learn more »

    The Advantages of User Awareness in Public-sector Network Security

    To serve their citizens, federal/national, state and local governments must gather, create, or process sensitive information. As various high-profile breaches have demonstrated, this data is not sufficiently protected, particularly from the insiders whose actions are responsible for the majority of public sector security incidents. Traditional network security focuses on detecting outsiders attempting to steal data or disrupt network operations, but does little to monitor or limit the actions of legitimate users that make mistakes or deliberately misuse data. User and directory controls verify legitimate users, but they won't prevent accidental disclosure of sensitive data, exfiltration of sensitive data by legitimate users, or insiders with stolen credentials from accessing data. Preventing security incidents and protecting government information requires a comprehensive, organization-wide access approach that can accommodate the context of individual users, the data they need access to, and the limits on what they can do with that data. The Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Security Platform prevents security incidents while fully enabling user productivity by granting access contextually to those who need it, and denying it to all others. This, coupled with denying all applications that are not needed by the organization, immediately reduces a government organization’s threat posture.

    Government: Securing Your Virtual Data Center on AWS

    With our new data-driven culture, data must be and is everywhere. Everyone—Minister to citizen, military or civilian student to patient, sister military force to civilian employee—becomes both the supplier and the consumer of the government’s information. We are benefiting from the tremendous changes in how/when/why we access what data. This paper explains how Palo Alto Networks VM-Series can provide threat prevention across your AWS GovCloud or C2S environments.

    Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation

    The U.S. Government’s Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) program “support(s) … government-wide and agency-specific efforts to provide adequate, risk-based, and cost-effective cybersecurity.” The CDM program is designed to roll out in three phases. This white paper describes how the Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Security Platform, in combination with select technology and delivery partners, supports all three CDM phases and enables agencies to achieve the security objectives of the program.
